Anyway, I was never a huge fan of Lucy watching SpongeBob though. Well, I'm not really supposed to be letting her watch any television at all. But, you know what? We can't keep it away from her! She loves it!
We know that the American Pediatrics Something-or-Another says that children under the age of two years old should not watch any television. And, when they do start watching television that they should only watch one hour a day.
Do you follow this rule?
I confess - we don't always. We do allow her to sit down with us on the weekend and watch a family movie. She has enjoyed The Princess and the Frog, Bolt, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Despicable Me. We are probably going to let her watch Hop with us this weekend too. Is that awful?
To get on with my story....Lucy loves SpongeBob. We've even allowed her to watch it on occasion; because, Heath and I enjoy it too. Bad reason - but, I'm being honest. Until...
One Saturday morning I'm watching the ol'Bob with Lucy. It is yet another episode about Plankton trying to get the Krusty Krab secret recipe. Somehow, Sandy the Squirrel fit into the story line and she accidentally takes Plankton home in her water suit. When she arrives home, she decides to take a shower.
Then, to my horror, what does she do? She takes her fur off. What? Yes! She take her fur off!!!
And, then she hangs it on a hook next to the shower!
Plankton is watching all of this, by the way, which is a little screwed-up too.
So, Sandy is joyfully showering, bald.
While her fur carcass is hanging next to her.
What?!
Then, Plankton steals the fur shell, to pose as Sandy and steal the recipe.
Is this disturbing to anyone else?
Let's pretend for a second that it isn't gross and messed up; it's inaccurate! I don't want Lucy thinking that squirrels' skin just comes off!
I'm at a loss for words about the images I have just laid before you...
Personal thoughts?

More than once Brian and I have done the, WHAT THE WHAT? That's messed up. Now, We found out this week Alex has this crazy fear of moths and butterflies. When we asked him why, guess where it came from? The spongebob episode where the butterfly is attacking the town (not really but, patrick and sbob are scared) and everytime they show it, they do the close up of him and do some eerie music. So, my 5 year old is scared of moths. He has a rough road ahead!
ReplyDeleteOk, I found this funny! I don't care for Sponge Bob & we don't watch it, but yes. That is wrong! As for the whole TV thing, nope I don't follow the rule of time. I figure as long as they are still getting lots of activity outside & a lot of interactive play both at school & at home, TV isn't going to hurt them. Its sad, but honestly, if we are home- the TV is on. Even if no one is watching it.... The kids like PBS Sprout & the Disney shows & I usually let them watch for a while after school to wind down. They watch it in the evening with us too. Is it sad that both of them can tell you what happened in the latest Survivor episode & who got kicked off Amazing Race? We are careful about what they watch- no Law & Order SVU or Desperate Housewives, but we enjoy our family time snuggling on the couch. :) I now will never look at a squirrel the same way... lol
ReplyDeleteWe are spongebob watchers at our house. A lot times if I catch something like the squarl skin thin I will say something like "oh that's just silly squarls can't do that". I guess it's not all that different than the cartoons we watched where they get bolwn up but are fine or get squished with an anvil. Sometimes I'm like you though and think "really??"
ReplyDeleteTisha..
oh my gosh! it has been a long while since I watched cartoons, but that doesn't seem normal...
ReplyDeleteSeriously what are these writers thinking? Gotta give them props for the theme song though! "lives in a pineapple under the sea. SPONGE BOB SQUARE PANTS!"
sorry I had to!

Oh I LOVE this post! Ok, so yes, I too have heard all about not letting kids watch ANY television under two years old...all I have to say?? YEAH RIGHT! I swear, I don't know ONE parent in the world who follows that rule. I think the person who made that rule DOESN"T HAVE ANY KIDS! Please..
ReplyDeletebut about Spongebob? I refuse to let my kids watch that show. REFUSE. But Disney movies? My kids have seen every single one. and I DON"T feel guilty about it.
VERY gross! Totally agree! :) your blog always cracks me up! :) Thanks for the smiles! :)
